YouthSpeak was started in 1997 to lower the voting age by NYRA co-founder Avi Hein, several years prior to the founding of the National Youth Rights Association.

About

YouthSpeak was one of the first organizations since the 26th Amendment lowered the voting age to 18 that achieved press coverage about a lowered voting age. YouthSpeak received international press, from California to Washington, DC, to Paris, France. Hein and Keith Mandell, under the aeges of YouthSpeak, successfully organized the first nationwide protests for a lowered voting age, an event that still gets reported on.

Upon the creation of NYRA, Hein devoted his time to serving as a board member and president of NYRA. He provided NYRA with the resources that had been found in YouthSpeak and it was due to Hein's work in YouthSpeak that NYRA was founded, in part, to deal with the issue of the voting age.
