Censorship is the restriction of what can be witnessed, and by who. Censorship can and does occur in all media in which things can be witnessed, including real life (this was the earliest form of censorship), written materials, pictures (drawings and photos), sculptures, music and other audio materials, and audio-visual materials (movies, television, webcam clips, etc.).

The things that are most often censored throughout the world include nudity, sex, violence, forbidden words or phrases, political or religious dissent (such as racism in Briton and France, and depiction of Mohammed in islamic countries), and useful information (such as sexual information and weapons information).

There are 2 types of censorship, which are:
1. universal censorship, in which particular things are censored from everyone, usually because those things are considered absolutely evil, and
2. hierarchial censorship, in which particular things are censored from a subjugated class of people, so as to reward the dominant class and oppress the subjugated class.

The latter type of censorship is usually applied to pre-adults.
