Biography

Born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Fletcher spent his teen years in North Omaha, Nebraska. A youth activist from an early age, Fletcher started an unsanctioned community environmental campaign at his high school at age 15, and at 17 he started a neighborhood youth council.[6] Fletcher graduated from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, in 2002 with a degree in critical pedagogy and yout studies.[7] He began graduate studies in educational leadership and policy studies at the University of Washington in 2006.[8]

Career

Starting with his first youth-related job when he was 14,[9] Fletcher has worked professionally with young people since then, working with elementary, middle and high schools across the country, as well as with the Points of Light Foundation, the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, and with the New York State Student Support Services Office.[10] He has worked with several national youth-serving organizations, including a fellowship with the Points of Light Foundation. His work with the federal government includes two terms in AmeriCorps, including one in Lincoln, Nebraska, working with Kurdish and Iraqi refugee children[11]. Fletcher has presented at numerous local, state and national conferences, including the National School Board Association[12], National Service Learning Conference, and at international conferences, including one held in Brazil[13].

Fletcher started The Freechild Project in 2001[14], and SoundOut in 2003. He is a contributing editor to the academic journal Review of Education, Pedagogy and Cultural Studies[15] and on the boards of the Kijana Voices Foundation[16] and the National Youth Rights Association[17]. He recently worked for the Washington State Department of Health as a school health program manager,[18] and is now a full-time consultant to K-12 schools and youth-serving organizations across the United States and Canada.[19]

A variety of media and government sources have sought out Fletcher's views about a variety of topics, including youth politics[20], curfews[21], environmental activism[22], youth participation[23], student voice[24][25] and school reform[26].
